LS SO CI 200 CULTURAL INTRODUCTION TO ITALY 1 CREDIT HOUR (45 lecture and Field trips hours)

 

The Study of the culture of Italy helps the student to acquire a deep awareness of both the cultural unit and diversity of the people of Italy. Majors Themes of Italian Culture and though are presented in historical contexts and brought to life through guided tours and visits to churches, synagogues, museums, palaces as well as other significant sites to understan present­day Italy.

 

This course is intended to provide students with in­depth introduction to Florentine­Italian Culture and designed to explore the diversity of food, culture and history Italy in order to broaden awareness and understanding of the role of cultural heritage on customs and life styles. The approach is to focus on several topics: gastronomy, art history, language and socially relevant matters. A strong component will be dedicated to language learning, in order to give the basic of communication. Students will also learn the main Renaissance artists and be able to identify the individual styles of artists such as Donatello, Masaccio, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Verrocchio, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, but they will place the artists within the social, political and cultural contexts of the time. Visits are an integral part of this course.

On­site teaching is a significant part of this course and is aimed at providing the student with the incomparable experience of studying important sites of artistic architectural and socially relevance. Students are encouraged to truly observe the sites through active participation and to discuss their impressions and reactions. Student will also become uniquely aware of the day­to­day problems of sustainability and responsibility of tourism in the astoundingly rich cultural heritage of Florence.
