ITALIAN FRENCH RIVIERA: Art, Food and Wine – A Journey of Discovery

Art, Food and Wine of the Italian French Riviera – A Journey of Discovery

LS SO CP 210 CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES: EXPLORING & DISCOVERY 2 CREDIT HOURS (15 lecture hours – 30 hours of field trips)

This course introduces the students to understanding of the Old Continent culture and civilization: its different historical environment, its traditions, and presentday situations. Integral part of the course are visits and fieldtrip sites.

The course explores all the different cultural aspects of the Italian French Riviera and Provence, including representations of the area through myths and legends, songs and literature, film, food, wine and culture. Students will be asked to maintain a journal and to develop their skills in discussing and writing about cultural traits. Goals include learning where the local identity came from and how the portrayal of it has evolved over time, and gaining a greater knowledge of the many artists, poets, writers, filmmakers and social scientists who have been drawn to the highly agreeable task of attempting to define the Italian French Riviera and Provence. Special attention will be given to viticulture and enology of Southern France. The southern part of France was active in viticulture long before its northern counterparts. With an eye to tradition, this region has embraced the present. There are methods of varietal bottling made from familiar (international) grapes as well as unique blends and wine products that have been gracing tables and taverns since antiquity. Come discover some new wines and rediscover some longforgotten treasures!

There will be a brief, final, inclass exit oral presentation on the assignment given during the course.
